About Nilachal Carbo Metalicks: business, products and customers

Nilachal Carbo Metalicks bakes imported coking coal into low ash coke that ferro-chrome and other ferro-alloy makers in Odisha use in their furnaces. It also sells the fine coke left over to pellet and steel plants, and its shares trade on BSE SME.

Nilachal Carbo Metalicks was set up in 2003 and makes low ash metallurgical coke, sized and low in phosphorus for ferro-alloy furnaces, at its own plant at Baramana in Jajpur district, Odisha. It also runs a leased coke plant at Visakhapatnam and has a contract manufacturing tie-up with Om Avi Carbon Resources, which the annual report lists as a concern under common control. The coke goes mostly to ferro-chrome makers in Odisha, and the coke fines to iron ore pellet and steel plants nearby.

The business model shapes the numbers. Coking coal, imported through traders, is most of the cost, so revenue follows coal and coke prices more than volumes, and the margin is the spread between them; the CARE note says a fall in coal prices has to be passed on at once while a rise reaches customers only with a lag. There are no long-term contracts, and in FY26 a large part of revenue came from trading goods rather than from coke the company made, which keeps total revenue steady while the plant makes less. Coal advances to suppliers, stock and customer credit absorb cash, so operating cash flow has been negative in the last two years.

Read more about the business

In the offer document the company names Stratmont Industries as its only listed peer. The annual report says import competition shapes domestic coke prices, and that the anti-dumping duty imposed on low ash coke from China, Indonesia, Colombia, Japan and Russia from January 2026 may help domestic makers.

What is new: the company listed in September 2025, is seeking approvals for two more coke oven batteries at the Odisha site, and says it is evaluating a special alloy casting division aimed at aerospace and defence parts.

From the offer document (prospectus, August 2025), the annual report for FY26 and the CARE Ratings note of November 2025.

The company's own money, its net worth, has grown fast. It borrowed much more last year. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business used more cash than it brought in. The company gives no guidance on sales or profit and has no order book. The offer document set out one new coke oven battery of 34,400 tonnes a year at Baramana, with ₹4.7 cr of issue money planned for FY26 and ₹8.7 cr for FY27, and ₹3.0 cr to modernise the existing plant. In the FY26 annual report the Managing Director says the company is seeking approvals for two more batteries that would take coke capacity to 0.15 million tonnes a year, subject to approvals and financing, and that a special alloy casting division of up to 50,000 tonnes a year is being evaluated. The company reports no deviation in the use of issue money.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

The company earns the spread between imported coking coal and the special low ash coke it sells to a few ferro-alloy makers close to its plant.

Its weak spots are a handful of customers, half-used plants, money tied up in advances and receivables, and a large balance owed by a related concern.

WatchCan it set its own prices? No: coke prices follow coal, and price falls must be passed on at once while rises reach customers later.
The evidence. Coking coal was about 87% of cost of sales in FY24; CARE notes the lag in passing on price rises; there are no long-term contracts.CARE Ratings note, November 2025, p.1
AverageHow strong is it against rivals?A special low phosphorus grade and a site near the port and the customers help, but imported coke competes on price.
The evidence. The plant is about 100 km from Paradip port and 60 to 130 km from ferro-alloy plants; the annual report says import competition is likely to remain a challenge.CARE Ratings note, November 2025, p.2; annual report FY26, p.91
WatchWho are its customers?Ferro-chrome and other ferro-alloy makers, but almost all revenue comes from ten of them.
The evidence. Top ten customers gave 98.83% of FY25 revenue and the largest gave 28.33%.Offer document, p.121
WatchDoes it need a lot of money?Yes: advances to coal suppliers, stock and customer credit took more cash than the business earned in FY26.
The evidence. Operating cash flow was negative ₹31.9 cr in FY26; advances to suppliers rose to ₹36.0 cr and receivables to ₹40.3 cr.Annual report FY26, p.95 and p.124
WatchCan it keep finding new work? Its own plants were half used and sales of coke it made fell in FY26, with trading filling the gap.
The evidence. Plant use was 48.87% in FY25; coke made and sold fell to ₹131.5 cr in FY26 while traded goods gave ₹58.9 cr.Offer document, p.115; annual report FY26, p.124
AverageDo good and bad years swing a lot?Profit has stayed positive, but revenue and margins move with coal prices and the steel cycle.
The evidence. Revenue fell from ₹266.2 cr in FY23 to ₹201.5 cr in FY25; the margin before interest, depreciation and tax fell to 10.80% in FY26 from 13.30%.Offer document, p.114; annual report FY26, p.93
