About Balaji Phosphates: business, products and customers

Balaji Phosphates makes a low cost phosphate fertilizer called Single Super Phosphate for farmers in Madhya Pradesh and nearby states, and owns a company next door that makes truck weighbridges. Its shares trade on NSE Emerge.

Balaji Phosphates makes Single Super Phosphate (SSP), a cheap fertilizer that gives soil phosphorus and sulphur, at one plant in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, along with zinc sulphate and SSP fortified with zinc and boron, sold under the RATNAM and BPPL brands. It sells through dealers, retailers, wholesalers and state cooperatives, mainly in Madhya Pradesh and nearby states, and SSP is by far its largest product. The present promoters, Mohit Airen and Alok Gupta, took control of the company in 2014 and listed it on NSE Emerge in March 2025.

SSP falls under the government's nutrient based subsidy scheme, so part of the price of each tonne is a subsidy paid by the Government of India, earned only once retailers have sold the fertilizer to farmers. Because the government in effect sets the subsidy and the retail price, rises in the cost of imported rock phosphate, sulphuric acid and fuel come mostly out of the margin, which Crisil says limits how far costs can be passed on. Cash comes in slowly, partly because the subsidy is collected from the government after the sale, and stock peaks in March because fertilizer has to reach dealers before the monsoon.

Read more about the business

Its subsidiary Jyoti Weighing Systems, beside the fertilizer plant, makes pit and pitless truck weighbridges and has started making and installing weigh in motion systems. The offer document compares the company with the listed phosphate fertilizer makers Coromandel International, Paradeep Phosphates and Rama Phosphates, all far larger, and says low entry barriers leave the industry open to new capacity from existing producers.

In FY26 the company spent over ₹13 cr on a new finished goods warehouse of over 8,000 tonnes, a rebuilt granulation plant, a new chimney and overhead cranes. In July and August 2026 the board approved share warrants and plans to bring the businesses of two promoter group companies, Chatak Agro (India) and Divya Jyoti Agritech, into the company, partly in exchange for new shares.

From the March 2025 offer document, the FY26 and FY25 annual reports, the Crisil rating note of 4 June 2026 and the exchange announcements of 10 July and 27 August 2026.

In its favour

  • The promoters own a large part of the company: 69.90%.

To watch

  • The terms of the purchases of the Chatak Agro (India) and Divya Jyoti Agritech businesses from the promoter group, and of the warrants, approved by the board on 27 August 2026.
  • Whether the guarantee for Divya Shakti Foods' bank loans stays in place; in FY25 the company also gave that firm a ₹9.88 cr capital advance and a ₹6.51 cr loan, which the FY25 annual report says were recovered before the accounts were signed (Annual report FY25, p.156).
  • The joint statutory auditor Bagaria & Co. LLP resigned with effect from 9 June 2025 (Annual report FY26, p.41); in June 2026 NSE asked about a missing auditor's certificate on the use of IPO money, which the company said was left out through human error (Reply to NSE, 1 July 2026, p.1).
  • Criminal cases filed by state agriculture officials under the Fertilizer Control Order over fertilizer samples found below standard, pending in courts in Maharashtra and elsewhere at the time of the offer document (Offer document, p.292 and p.293).
  • It paid no dividend in the past year.

Sales have grown slowly. Last year profit grew more slowly than sales, so the profit kept from each rupee of sales slipped.

Balaji Phosphates debt and cash flow

Balance sheet · Cash flow · Working capital

The company's own money, its net worth, has grown. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business brought in less cash than it showed as profit, so part of the profit is still to be collected. It spent more on assets and investments than the business brought in, and raised the rest from loans or shares. Customers take longer to pay than they did in FY24, which ties up more of the company's money in unpaid bills.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Balaji Phosphates turns imported rock and acid into a cheap fertilizer that farmers need every season, and earns a thin margin between prices the government shapes and its own input costs.

Its weak spots are slow cash, bank lines that are nearly fully used, and many money dealings with companies run by its promoters.

WatchCan it set its own prices?Hardly. The government sets the subsidy and in effect the retail price, so when acid and fuel costs rise the margin shrinks.
The evidence. Crisil says government control of retail prices and the nutrient based subsidy leaves limited scope to pass on higher costs, and that sharp rises in sulphuric acid and furnace oil prices pushed margins to around 7% in the second half of FY26.Crisil rating note, 4 June 2026, p.1
AverageHow strong is it against rivals? Its plant sits close to raw materials and to its farm markets, which keeps freight low, but SSP is simple to make and many regional and national firms compete.
The evidence. Crisil lists an established market position and the Dewas location as strengths; the offer document says competition comes from regional, national, international and unorganised players and that entry barriers are low.Crisil rating note, 4 June 2026, p.1; Offer document, p.144
WatchWho are its customers?Dealers, retailers and state cooperatives that order without long term contracts, plus the government, which pays the subsidy part of each sale only after retailers have sold it to farmers.
The evidence. The top five customers took 46.74% of FY24 product sales, excluding subsidy; customers can cancel, reduce or delay orders; subsidy is earned on actual sale by retailers to farmers.Offer document, p.36, p.124 and p.209
WatchDoes it need a lot of money?Yes, for working capital. Money owed by customers and the government, and stock built up before the monsoon, tie up cash, and the bank lines are nearly fully drawn.
The evidence. Crisil puts debtors at about 145 days and stock at about three months in March 2026; in FY26 trade receivables rose by ₹23.4 cr and inventories by ₹18.1 cr.Crisil rating note, 4 June 2026, p.1; Annual report FY26, p.100
AverageCan it keep finding new work?Fertilizer is bought every season and Crisil notes repeat orders, but there is no order book and the main plant has long run at a little over half its capacity.
The evidence. SSP plant use was 58.50% in FY24 and 55.92% in FY26; the offer document says the company works order by order.Offer document, p.36 and p.126; Annual report FY26, p.14
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Yes. Sales fell one year and jumped the next, and profit in the latest half was far below the half before it.
The evidence. Revenue fell 16.52% in FY25 on subdued demand, delayed orders and pricing pressure, then rose 34.75% in FY26; Crisil puts operating margins in an 8% to 12% range over four years.Annual report FY25, p.81; Annual report FY26, p.96; Crisil rating note, 4 June 2026, p.1
