About Dhanlaxmi Crop Science: business, products and customers

Dhanlaxmi Crop Science breeds, grows and packs seeds that farmers sow, mainly cotton but also wheat, maize, bajra, soybean, cumin and others, from its base at Himatnagar in Gujarat. Its shares trade on NSE Emerge.

Dhanlaxmi Crop Science develops hybrid and open pollinated seeds at its research farm at Himatnagar, has them multiplied on farmland of contracted seed growers, then cleans, tests, treats and packs them at its Himatnagar plant. It sells through dealers and distributors in states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Its cotton hybrids carry the Bollgard II trait under a sub-licence from Mahyco Monsanto Biotech, and its research is led by Dr. Fula Bhila Patil.

Seed is a one season business: the company says about 95% of its revenue comes in April to September, ahead of the kharif sowing, so the second half of each year usually shows little revenue and a loss. Seed is sold into the dealer channel before the season and unsold packets come back, so revenue can be cut sharply by returns after the fact, as happened in FY26 when the company says about 70% of cotton sales were returned. Because growers are paid and seed is processed months before sale, cash is tied up in stock, and a bad season leaves both stock and dealer dues on the books.

Read more about the business

The documents do not name rivals; Kaveri Seed Company, a listed maker of hybrid cotton and maize seed sold through dealers, does the same work on a far larger scale. The offer document notes that two promoter group firms, Jay Hind Seed Science LLP and Global Hybrid Seeds Co, are in a similar business, with no agreement not to compete.

What is new: after a record FY25 helped by its IPO year, FY26 revenue fell sharply as cotton acreage dropped, rains damaged crops and illegal herbicide tolerant cotton seed spread. The company is widening into maize, wheat, paddy, soybean, gram and vegetables, and in August 2026 announced regulatory approval for its seeds in Chhattisgarh.

From the red herring prospectus (December 2024), the FY26 annual report, the June 2025 investor presentation and the company's press release of 1 August 2026.

  • Sales in Chhattisgarh after the approval announced on 1 August 2026.
  • The share of non-cotton crops, which the company says it aims to raise from 66%.
  • Customers take longer to pay than before: 154 days in FY26, against 88 in FY22.

From the company's documents first, then the reported figures read by fixed rules, the same for every company. Facts, not a view on the shares.

A tax rate above 60% or below zero (FY26) comes from tax charged on a small or negative profit, as reported.

Earnings per share before FY26 is on the share count of that time, before later bonus or share issues, so it does not compare with the years after.

Dhanlaxmi Crop Science debt and cash flow

Balance sheet · Cash flow · Working capital

The company's own money, its net worth, has shrunk. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business used more cash than it brought in. It spent more on assets and investments than the business brought in, and raised the rest from loans or shares. Customers take longer to pay than they did in FY24, which ties up more of the company's money in unpaid bills.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Dhanlaxmi Crop Science earns nearly all its money in one sowing season by selling packed seed to dealers, so one good or bad season decides the year.

Its weak spots are dependence on cotton, seed returned unsold, a handful of large buyers, and cash locked in stock and dealer dues.

WatchCan it set its own prices? No. Cotton seed prices face pressure from cheap illegal seed and from farmers moving to other crops.
The evidence. The FY26 annual report cites pricing pressure across crops, illegal herbicide tolerant cotton seed displacing approved hybrids, and lower cotton prices after duty free imports.Annual report FY26, p.12 and p.40
AverageHow strong is it against rivals? It has its own research, registered cotton hybrids and a Bollgard II licence, but it is a small company in a crowded seed market.
The evidence. It holds PPV&FR registrations for cotton hybrids ZCH-511, 25D51 and 25D55 and a Bollgard II sub-licence since 2015; the offer document says competition for products, dealers and growers is intense.Red herring prospectus, p.132, p.161 and p.164
WatchWho are its customers?Dealers and distributors who pass the seed on to farmers, and a few of them take most of the seed.
The evidence. Top five customers gave 86.69% of revenue in the half year to September 2024; the company had about 1,400 dealers and distributors in FY26.Red herring prospectus, p.165; Annual report FY26, p.41
WatchDoes it need a lot of money?Yes, for working capital. Seed is grown and stored long before it is paid for, and returns and slow dealers stretch this further.
The evidence. Inventory was ₹39.1 cr and trade receivables ₹16.1 cr at March 2026 against revenue of ₹38.1 cr; operating cash flow was negative in FY25 and FY26.Annual report FY26, p.25, p.50 and p.59
AverageCan it keep finding new work?It is adding crops and states, but must win back dealers and farmers each season.
The evidence. Non-cotton crops were 66% of FY26 revenue; a pipeline of chilli, maize, okra and gram hybrids and varieties; approval for its seeds in Chhattisgarh announced in August 2026.Annual report FY26, p.41 and p.42; Press release, 1 August 2026
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Very much. Weather, cotton acreage and returns turned a record year into a loss year.
The evidence. Revenue fell from ₹129.3 cr in FY25 to ₹38.1 cr in FY26 and profit of ₹8.7 cr turned into a loss of ₹0.49 cr.Annual report FY26, p.25
