About GEM Enviro Management: business, products and customers

GEM Enviro Management helps companies that use plastic packaging meet their legal duty to have an equal amount of plastic waste recycled, by arranging recycling certificates for them from recyclers. Its shares trade on BSE SME.

GEM began in Delhi in 2013 trading plastic waste and products made from it. After the plastic waste rules put the duty to recycle on producers, importers and brand owners, it became a go-between: recyclers and waste processors generate extended producer responsibility (EPR) certificates on the pollution control board's portal, and GEM arranges their transfer to its clients, mostly FMCG and beverage brands, along with registration, filings and advice. It also trades industrial plastic scrap and offers ESG and BRSR reporting services.

Because GEM pays recyclers for the certificates and bills clients for them, its revenue includes the full value of the credits it passes on, and its margin is only the gap between the two prices. That is why sales can rise while profit falls: in FY26 the company says higher certificate procurement costs and new small competitors squeezed that gap. The business needs few fixed assets, but clients take months to pay.

Read more about the business

The Central Pollution Control Board has since brought in an electronic trading and settlement platform where EPR certificates are traded and settled directly. The company says this has materially hit its core certificate business and expects lower volumes and margins, so it is moving into scrap channelling, compliance and ESG work, digital platforms through a joint venture, and an underground power cable project in Noida through a subsidiary.

The offer document says GEM has no listed peers, so none are named for comparison.

From the offer document (Prospectus, June 2024), the annual report for FY26, the May 2026 investor presentation and the company's announcement of 16 September 2026.

What the company said, and what happened

The company's own statements, attributed, set against what it later reported; not newboard's estimates

The company says the move to the exchange-based EPR certificate platform will reduce its business volumes and put pressure on margins in the coming year, and that it is diversifying into waste channelling, compliance, ESG advisory, digital sustainability services and ESG-focused infrastructure, with these plans at various stages of assessment. Its announcement of 29 September 2026 says an investment in Solluz Energy is expected to be completed on or before 31 March 2027; a revised agreement with Solluz was signed on 12 October 2026 (only the subject lines of these two announcements were available).

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

GEM earns a thin fee between what recyclers charge for certificates and what brands pay, so sales look large next to profit.

Its weak spot is that a new government trading platform cuts out the go-between role on which most of its business rests.

WatchCan it set its own prices?Certificate costs rose and smaller rivals pushed prices down, so the company says its pricing power was hurt.
The evidence. The FY26 annual report puts the margin fall down to higher EPR procurement costs and increased competition from smaller market participants.Annual report FY26, p.25
WatchHow strong is it against rivals? Its know-how of the rules and its recycler network helped, but the company itself says there are no entry barriers and the new platform reduces the need for intermediaries.
The evidence. The offer document lists competition with no licensing or capex barriers as a threat; the annual report says the exchange has reduced intermediary-driven transactions.Offer document, p.142; Annual report FY26, p.20
AverageWho are its customers?Clients are mainly well known FMCG and beverage brands, but the largest one alone brought about a fifth of sales.
The evidence. Varun Beverages and Bengal Beverages are named clients; the top customer was 22.85% and the top ten 57.35% of revenue in the nine months to December 2023.Offer document, p.140 and p.145
AverageDoes it need a lot of money? It owns few assets, but clients pay slowly, so receivables are large, and it has started to borrow and to put money into new ventures.
The evidence. Standalone receivables were ₹3,645.06 lakh and short-term borrowings ₹500.57 lakh at March 2026, with cash down to ₹402.42 lakh.Investor presentation, May 2026, p.8
WatchCan it keep finding new work? Its main source of work is being reshaped by regulation, and the new lines it is moving into are still early.
The evidence. The company says its core certificate business has been materially impacted and that diversification plans are at various stages of assessment.Annual report FY26, p.13 to 14 and p.20
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Its results depend on rules set by the pollution control board, and a change in those rules has already halved its margins.
The evidence. The offer document lists frequent CPCB rule changes as a threat; the standalone EBITDA margin fell from 13.62% to 6.81% in FY26.Offer document, p.142; Annual report FY26, p.26
