About Essex Marine: business, products and customers

Essex Marine buys fresh shrimp and fish on India's east coast, cleans, freezes and packs them at its plant near Digha in West Bengal, and ships them to food buyers abroad. It also processes seafood for other exporters and rents out cold storage in Kolkata, and its shares trade on the BSE SME platform.

Essex Marine, based in Kolkata, has processed and exported frozen seafood for over 16 years under its own Essex brand. It buys farmed vannamei shrimp from farmers in West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and marine fish and shrimp from landing centres such as Digha, Diamond Harbour and Paradeep, then peels, grades, freezes and packs them at its plant at Shankarpur. Buyers are mainly food service distributors and warehouse chains in China and Europe, and the company recently shipped headless vannamei shrimp to Japan.

The company earns in three ways, and the mix changes the numbers a lot. When it exports its own product, revenue carries the full value of the shrimp it bought, so sales are large and the margin per rupee is thin; when export prices are poor it processes shrimp for merchant exporters for a fee, which keeps the plant running but brings in far less revenue; and it earns steady rent from its dry and cold store in Kolkata. Raw shrimp is bought at spot prices with no supply contracts, demand dips after the new year season, and most sales are billed in dollars, so input prices, the season and the rupee all move profit.

Money from the August 2025 listing paid for doubling the peeling line, which the offer document says limited the whole plant, a new ready-to-cook blanching section, working capital and repaying loans. The offer document names Kings Infra Ventures and Zeal Aqua as the listed companies that also process marine and farmed fish and shrimp, while saying they are not exactly comparable in size or business mix.

From the offer document (Prospectus, July 2025) and the annual report for FY26.

Essex Marine debt and cash flow

Balance sheet · Cash flow · Working capital

The company's own money, its net worth, has grown fast. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business used more cash than it brought in. It spent more on assets and investments than the business brought in, and raised the rest from loans or shares. Customers take longer to pay than they did in FY24, which ties up more of the company's money in unpaid bills.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Essex Marine earns its money by turning raw shrimp and fish into frozen export packs, and keeps its plant busy with processing work and cold storage rent when exports are weak.

Its weak spots are dependence on world shrimp prices, a small group of buyers in a few countries, and profit that leans on income from outside operations.

WatchCan it set its own prices?Frozen shrimp is a widely traded product, so the company takes the market price for both raw shrimp and the finished packs.
The evidence. Raw shrimp and fish are bought at spot rates without contracts and the company says it may be unable to pass higher costs on; it cites price sensitivity in its key markets.Offer document, p.32 and p.141
AverageHow strong is it against rivals?Certified processing close to a large landing centre gives it a footing, but competition is intense at home and from other shrimp exporting countries.
The evidence. The plant holds FSSC, BRC and HACCP certification and sits near Digha; the offer document names Vietnam, Thailand, Ecuador and China as competing suppliers.Offer document, p.124 to 125 and p.141
WatchWho are its customers?A handful of overseas buyers and merchant exporters bring in most of the revenue, ordering without long-term agreements.
The evidence. Top ten customers were 69.36% of FY25 revenue and 96.02% in FY24; top five were 45.15% in FY25.Offer document, p.28
AverageDoes it need a lot of money? The plant upgrades were modest in cost, but buying raw shrimp in the harvest season ties up money in stock, which is why part of the offer went to working capital.
The evidence. The peeling and ready-to-cook projects cost ₹3.3 cr in all, while ₹6.0 cr of offer money went to working capital and ₹7.2 cr to repaying loans; the company buys raw material in bulk in peak season.Offer document, p.32; Annual report FY26, p.76 to 77
AverageCan it keep finding new work?Repeat buyers bring most of the business and processing work fills gaps, though there is no order book figure or contract to rely on.
The evidence. Repeat orders from key customers were 72.72% of FY25 revenue; the company says it also does job work to keep the plant running at optimal capacity.Offer document, p.28 and p.31
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Exports can collapse in a bad year, as they did when the Russia-Ukraine war and India-China tension hit, and the business then shifts to fee work.
The evidence. Export sales fell from ₹48.9 cr in FY22 to ₹6.3 cr in FY23; the company says demand is also seasonal and dips after the new year.Offer document, p.30 and p.125
