About Phantom Digital Effects: business, products and customers

Phantom Digital Effects makes visual effects for films, web series and advertisements, from studios in Chennai and other Indian cities and, through studios it has bought, in the United States, Britain and Europe. Its shares trade on NSE Emerge.

Phantom Digital Effects, which calls itself PhantomFX, is a visual effects studio. Its artists add computer-made creatures, worlds, fire, water and crowds to filmed scenes, clean up shots and finish them, for Indian films, Hollywood films and shows on streaming services. Its own studios are in Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and it now groups all its studios under the name Phantom Media Group.

It has grown by buying studios abroad. It bought most of Tippett Studio in the United States and fully owned it from July 2025, and in October 2025 paid the first part of the price for Milk VFX and Lola Post in Britain and Europe, with the rest paid in later parts. It also set up a studio in Hangzhou, China, and a lower cost studio called Spectre Post in Bengaluru. The company says it pitches costly work through Tippett, work that needs British or European tax incentives through Milk, and lower cost work through Phantom, with much of the work done by its artists in India.

Read more about the business

The way it is paid shapes the numbers. Each project has milestones, and the company records revenue as the work progresses but can send an invoice only when the client approves a milestone, so a large part of what it books waits as unbilled work and unpaid bills. Cash therefore comes in well after profit is reported, and the company has raised money from investors and banks to carry this. Since Tippett joined, much of the cost sits in the Indian company while the revenue is billed by Tippett, so the Indian company's own results and the group results look very different.

Its 2022 offer document named Prime Focus, Pixar, SideFX and Sitni Sati among its key competitors, and said it faces intense competition from Indian and multinational companies.

From the 2022 offer document, the FY25 annual report, the November 2024 and November 2025 investor presentations and three earnings calls to November 2025. The FY26 audited results had not been filed by October 2026.

In its favour

  • Sales have grown very fast: 67% a year over three years.
  • It has little debt for its size: debt to equity 0.25.

To watch

  • Filing of the FY26 audited results, which the company told the exchange were delayed on 28 May, 12 September and 6 October 2026; on 15 July 2026 it also filed board comments on a fine levied by the exchange (exchange announcements).
  • The FY25 auditor's report: an emphasis of matter on a ₹14.3 cr payment not yet taken to profit and loss, and a qualified opinion on internal financial controls for want of customer and vendor credit checks (annual report FY25, p.48 and p.53).
  • The promoters' pledge of 53.32% of their shares in the March and June 2026 shareholding patterns, and the promoter group's holding of 43.95% against 54.74% in March 2025 (shareholding patterns).
  • Changes in people: a Chief Financial Officer who served about a month in 2024, company secretaries leaving in 2024 and 2025, and independent director Srinivasan Rajabather resigning on 10 June 2026 (annual report FY25, p.33; exchange filing).
  • Customers take longer to pay than before: 307 days in FY25, against 43 in FY19.

From the company's documents first, then the reported figures read by fixed rules, the same for every company. Facts, not a view on the shares.

Exceptional and other items: profit before tax beyond operating profit, other income, interest and depreciation, such as one-off items or a share of associates' profit, as reported.

A tax rate above 60% or below zero (FY19, FY21) comes from tax charged on a small or negative profit, as reported.

Earnings per share before FY22 is on the share count of that time, before later bonus or share issues, so it does not compare with the years after.

The company's own money, its net worth, has grown. It borrowed much more last year. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business used more cash than it brought in. Customers take longer to pay than they did in FY23, which ties up more of the company's money in unpaid bills.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Phantom sells visual effects work project by project, now under Western studio names it has bought, with much of the work done by its artists in India.

Its weak spot is cash: clients pay long after the work is booked, and the company has needed outside money to keep going and growing.

WatchCan it set its own prices? Not easily. Work is won by bidding, and the company says clients expect an Indian studio to be cheap, which is why it now pitches through its Western studios.
The evidence. The founder said clients want an Indian company to work at a very low cost but with high quality, and that the Western storefront helps it win work on better terms.Earnings call, November 2025, p.22 and p.23
AverageHow strong is it against rivals? It has a long list of Indian and Hollywood credits and now owns award-winning studios, but the field is crowded with large Indian and global names.
The evidence. It holds the Trusted Partner Network security certification; Tippett and Milk have won Academy, BAFTA and Emmy awards; the offer document names Prime Focus, Pixar, SideFX and Sitni Sati as key competitors.Offer document, p.87 and p.89; investor presentation, November 2025, p.17 and p.18
AverageWho are its customers?Film and streaming producers and bigger effects studios in India and abroad; a handful of clients bring a large share of revenue.
The evidence. The top five clients gave 44% of FY24 revenue and 63% of FY23 revenue; Milk lists Amazon, Netflix, Warner Bros. and the BBC among its clients.Investor presentation, November 2024, p.41; investor presentation, November 2025, p.18
WatchDoes it need a lot of money?Yes. It needs few machines, but unbilled work and unpaid bills have tied up close to a year of sales, and buying studios abroad has cost more.
The evidence. ₹85.7 cr was owed or unbilled at March 2025 against standalone revenue of ₹98.5 cr; operations used cash in FY24 and FY25; it raised ₹60.0 cr from institutions in July 2025 and pays for Tippett and Milk in parts.Annual report FY25, p.31, p.60 and p.76; investor presentation, November 2025, p.45; earnings call, November 2025, p.15 and p.19
StrongCan it keep finding new work?So far, yes. It reports work in hand worth about two years of FY25 revenue and a much larger list of bids, helped by the clients of the studios it bought.
The evidence. Order book of ₹201.3 cr in October 2025 and ₹817 cr of projects in bidding; the domestic pipeline is led by S.S. Rajamouli's upcoming film.Earnings call, November 2025, p.6; investor presentation, November 2025, p.30
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Yes. Work depends on studio and streaming budgets, and the Hollywood strikes slowed both work and payments.
The evidence. The company tied slow collections to the previous year's strikes; profit after tax fell in FY25 as revenue rose; the annual report lists dependence on global content spending as its first risk.Earnings call, June 2025, p.18; annual report FY25, p.19 and p.31
