About Positron Energy: business, products and customers

Positron Energy sources natural gas from many suppliers and delivers it through the national pipelines to city gas companies and factories. It also gives gas companies advice, project supervision and plant upkeep. Its shares trade on NSE Emerge.

Positron Energy, based in Gandhinagar, is a gas aggregator: it contracts gas from oil companies, LNG importers, domestic allocations and the Indian Gas Exchange, books pipeline space and schedules daily deliveries to the customer's gate. Most of its gas is imported LNG, and city gas distribution companies take the largest share, with power, glass, ceramics, fertiliser, steel and aluminium plants making up the rest. Gas sales gave almost all of FY26 revenue; consultancy, project management, construction supervision and plant upkeep gave the remainder.

Because revenue is the full value of the gas that passes through, the top line is large against the profit kept on each unit, and it rises and falls with gas prices: the finance head said gas went from about ₹1,000 to about ₹1,700 per MMBTU in 2026. Contracts are mostly back to back, so the company passes price changes on, but margins thin when it has to purchase spot gas before long term supply is signed, as happened in the first half of FY26. Interest on its cash, which it uses to back bank guarantees for new contracts, also adds to profit.

Read more about the business

Management said on the May 2026 call that the large oil marketing companies do the same gas aggregation work and that Positron's share of the market is very small. When supply from West Asia was halted under force majeure in March 2026, its suppliers gave it other LNG at higher prices, which it passed to customers.

From the offer document, the FY26 annual report, the November 2025 and May 2026 earnings calls and the November 2025 investor presentation.

The company says contracts already signed exceed 15,000 MMBTU a day, though some LNG from West Asia was under force majeure, and that its order book stood at ₹557.65 cr at the end of March 2026.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Positron Energy earns a thin margin on large volumes of gas it sources and delivers for others, plus fees for technical services, and needs very little plant to do it.

Its weak spots are that the gas itself is the same from any supplier, margins depend on how well purchase and sale contracts line up, and one large customer contract counts for much of its work.

WatchCan it set its own prices? It passes gas prices on to customers, but its own margin is set by the gap between purchase and sale contracts and by the price of competing fuels.
The evidence. The Managing Director said margins hit the bottom of the range in the first half of FY26 when the company had to purchase spot gas while crude oil, the competing fuel, was cheap.Earnings call, November 2025, p.7
AverageHow strong is it against rivals?Large oil marketing companies do the same work and the company's share is small; what it offers is the handling of pipelines, contracts and daily scheduling for buyers.
The evidence. The chief executive said all the leading oil marketing companies are in the same space and that Positron has a very small share; customers come for its contract and pipeline management.Earnings call, May 2026, p.15 and p.20
WatchWho are its customers? It has many customers across industries, but city gas companies take most of the gas and one contract counts for a large part of the work ahead.
The evidence. A single calendar 2026 supply agreement with one strategic customer was estimated at about ₹378 cr, against FY26 revenue of ₹442.2 cr.Presentation, November 2025, p.14; Annual report FY26, p.9
StrongDoes it need a lot of money? It uses public pipelines rather than its own, so it needs little plant; its cash mainly backs guarantees for new contracts.
The evidence. The annual report calls the model asset light, with about ₹81 cr in cash and debt to equity of 0.05 at the end of FY26.Annual report FY26, p.15; Earnings call, May 2026, p.16
StrongCan it keep finding new work?Gas handled has grown each year and its order book covers more than a year of sales, with long term supply contracts signed.
The evidence. Daily volume rose from about 4,000 MMBTU at listing to about 11,000 in FY26, and the order book was ₹557.65 cr at 31 March 2026.Earnings call, May 2026, p.18; Annual report FY26, p.10
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Sales have grown every year, but margins swing from half to half with gas supply and prices, and supply from West Asia was disrupted in 2026.
The evidence. The finance head said the business shows an EBITDA margin anywhere from about 4% to 10% depending on contracts and supply, and that West Asian LNG went under force majeure.Earnings call, May 2026, p.5 and p.19
