About Kalana Ispat: business, products and customers

Kalana Ispat melts steel scrap and sponge iron into billets, the rough steel bars that rolling mills turn into rods and bars, at a plant near Ahmedabad. It is building its own rolling mill. Its shares trade on NSE Emerge.

Kalana Ispat makes mild steel and alloy steel billets and ingots at its plant at Kalana village in Sanand taluka, near Ahmedabad, by melting steel scrap, sponge iron and ferro alloys. It sells them order by order to rolling mills and other makers serving infrastructure, construction and engineering, and also trades some scrap, iron ore and ingots. The business began as a trader of imported and ship-breaking scrap before it moved into melting.

Billets are a commodity, and raw material alone took about four fifths of sales in FY26, so the company keeps a thin spread between what it pays for scrap and what it gets for billets, and that spread moves with steel prices. When it has spare capacity it also casts billets for customers who bring their own metal and charges only a fee, so that job work shows up as a small service income rather than the full price of the steel; there was none in FY26. In the latest year most of the profit came from interest on IPO money held in deposits, and that money has since been spent.

Read more about the business

The IPO money has gone into a 1.4 MW ground mounted solar plant at Bhabhar in Banaskantha, meant to supply the existing plant, and a rolling mill at Khegariya in Viramgam taluka to make alloy steel round bars of 20 to 160 mm. The company says the mill is in the last steps of installation but has not started operating, and it gives no capacity or start date. The annual reports name no rivals and say the market has many organised and unorganised players, several with far larger resources.

Some business runs through promoter-linked firms. The company has lent money at 8% to Mika Steel & Alloys LLP, a promoter group shareholder that is also a customer and supplier, and it buys goods from Zaara Steel Traders and Shifa Steel Traders, whose owners are relatives of key managerial personnel.

From the FY26 and FY25 annual reports and the exchange disclosure of 27 August 2026.

  • Repayment of the ₹3.0 cr loan to Mika Steel & Alloys LLP, which has no fixed repayment schedule.

Balance sheet · Cash flow · Working capital

The company's own money, its net worth, has grown. Its loans are smaller than its own money. Last year the business used more cash than it brought in. It spent more on assets and investments than the business brought in, and drew on its cash. Customers pay faster than they did in FY24, which frees up the company's money.

Is it a good business? Six questions

Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.

Kalana Ispat earns a thin spread by melting scrap into billets and selling them to other steel makers, and the latest year's profit came mostly from interest rather than steel.

Its weak spots are falling sales, prices it does not control, an unfinished rolling mill and money lent to a promoter-linked firm.

WatchCan it set its own prices? No. Billets are a commodity and raw material takes most of each rupee of sales, so the company takes the market price.
The evidence. Raw material consumed was ₹40.9 cr against sales of ₹51.8 cr in FY26; the company names raw material price swings and competitive pressure as risks.Annual report FY26, p.67 and p.47; our arithmetic
WatchHow strong is it against rivals? It is a small melt shop in a crowded market, and the company itself says many rivals are bigger.
The evidence. The company describes numerous organised and unorganised players, several with larger financial resources, wider distribution and broader product ranges.Annual report FY26, p.47
WatchWho are its customers?Rolling mills and other steel users buying order by order; no customer is named, and one buyer is a promoter-linked firm.
The evidence. Of trade receivables of ₹2.1 cr at March 2026, ₹0.79 cr was owed by Mika Steel & Alloys LLP, which bought ₹0.81 cr of goods in FY26.Annual report FY26, p.66, p.90 and p.91
WatchDoes it need a lot of money?Yes. The IPO money has been spent on a solar plant and a rolling mill, cash is now low, and the promoters are adding money through warrants.
The evidence. Spending on fixed assets and work in progress was ₹15.8 cr in FY26; cash fell to ₹2.5 cr; 45 lakh warrants at ₹22.50 were approved for the promoter group.Annual report FY26, p.68, p.66 and p.32
WatchCan it keep finding new work?Sales have fallen two years running, and the new rolling mill, which should add finished bars, has not started.
The evidence. Revenue fell from ₹73.7 cr in FY24 to ₹51.8 cr in FY26; the company says the mill's commercial operations will begin in due course.Annual report FY25, p.86; Annual report FY26, p.30 and p.6
WatchDo good and bad years swing a lot?Yes. Steel demand and input costs swing, and on such a thin spread small price moves change the profit a lot.
The evidence. The FY25 chairman's message cites volatility from fluctuating demand cycles and rising input costs; profit after tax fell from ₹2.35 cr in FY24 to ₹0.97 cr in FY26.Annual report FY25, p.3 and p.35; Annual report FY26, p.30
