About Fonebox Retail: business, products and customers
Fonebox Retail runs a chain of mobile phone shops in Gujarat and Maharashtra under names such as Fonebook and My Mobile, offering phones of many brands, accessories and a few home appliances to walk-in shoppers. Most of the shops are owned by franchise partners who use its store names.
Fonebox Retail is a trader, not a maker: it purchases finished phones, accessories, televisions, air conditioners and laptops from brands and their distributors and passes them to shoppers through its stores. Phones and accessories are almost all of its sales, and home appliances are a small extra. The company began in 2021 by taking over existing store chains, the My Mobile stores in Surat and the Fonebook stores in Ahmedabad, and has added stores every year since.
Stores run on two models. Company owned stores are paid for and staffed by the company; franchise stores are funded by partners, carry one of its store names, take stock from the company, and pay it a fee of 1% of their sales. Partners also leave a deposit when a store opens, which the offer document counts as a source of working capital.
Read more about the business
Because the company resells branded goods, revenue is large but the share kept is thin: gross margin was close to a tenth of sales before listing, and net profit is roughly one rupee in every hundred. Shoppers pay at the counter, often through zero cost EMI arranged with finance partners such as Bajaj Finserv and IDFC First Bank who settle within days, so almost nothing is owed by customers; the money sits instead in stock on the shelves.
The offer document says it competes with organised and unorganised retailers, and the December 2024 presentation names online marketplaces such as Amazon and Flipkart, brand owned stores, and multi-brand chains such as Croma and Reliance Digital. On NSE Emerge, Jay Jalaram Technologies, Umiya Mobile and Cell Point (India) are other listed mobile phone retailers that sit in the same retailing group. What is new: a fourth store name, Fone Point, a planned move into Madhya Pradesh, and an agreed share swap to take over NWOM Retailers, another Ahmedabad mobile phone trader.
From the offer document, the December 2024 investor presentation and earnings call, the FY26 annual report, the FY26 results filing and the company's announcements of January, March, May and September 2026.

Is it a good business? Six questions
Each answer is about that one question, read from the documents; tap one for the evidence. Not a view on the shares.
Fonebox Retail earns a thin cut on every branded phone that passes through its own shops and its franchise partners' shops, and has grown quickly by adding stores and taking over other chains.
Its weak spots are thin margins, reliance on a few brands and suppliers, some of them linked to its directors, and a growing pile of stock.
WatchCan it set its own prices? No. Brands set phone prices and online sellers keep pressure on them, so the company competes on price and service and keeps a small slice.
AverageHow strong is it against rivals? It faces large chains and online marketplaces, but it has a dense network in Gujarat, and the company says brands now give more stock to multi-brand chains.
StrongWho are its customers? Many individual shoppers, none of them large, who pay on the spot or through finance partners, so almost nothing is owed to the company.
AverageDoes it need a lot of money? Its money is tied up mainly in stock, which has grown faster than sales, but partner deposits and supplier credit carry much of it and borrowings were nil at March 2026.
StrongCan it keep finding new work?It has kept adding stores, through franchise partners and takeovers, and has named new states it intends to enter.
AverageDo good and bad years swing a lot?Phone demand is steady through the year, but festivals fall in the second half, which brings in more sales and profit than the first.
